The Application of “Aluminum – Titanium – Steel” Transition Joint in Aluminum Electrolytic Industry

Specific Problem of “Aluminum – Steel” Composite

All dissimilar metal joints can be divided to two types:

- Combinations of metals that form chemical compounds.

- Combinations of metals that don’t forms chemical compounds.

Unfortunately, steel and aluminum forms intermetallic compounds that are very brittle and have low electrical conductivity. The similar situation for steel

– titanium and for titanium – aluminum. However, they are formed at much higher temperature and need longer time to grow.

Disadvantages of “Aluminum – Steel” Composite

“Aluminum – Steel” Joints have two significant disadvantages:

1) Long exposure time at temperature more than 300ºC leads to significant growing of intermetallics. This will reduce strength and electrical conductivity and finally leads to full destruction. As for “Aluminum – Titanium – Steel”, dangerous temperature is 500ºC.

2) Bigger chance to have bad quality because for “Aluminum – Steel” there should be:

- Stricter control of explosion welding technological process since small deviation in process parameters may lead to quality problems.

- Stricter control of temperature during welding to aluminum anode and to steel yoke.
